The ‘VIII Human Rights Congress: Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights’ (‘VIII Congreso de Derechos Humanos: Inteligencia Artificial y los Derechos Humanos’) was held on 16 and 17 October 2025, both in person in Valencia and online. The aim of the Congress was to promote a comprehensive approach to AI, linking it to the development of human rights and enhancing its positive aspects while preventing its risks. The Congress also aimed to improve citizens’ knowledge and skills regarding AI in relation to human rights and development.

Celia Fernández Aller, Professor of Law and Ethics at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and a member of SkincAir, took part in a roundtable discussion at the conference entitled ‘Big Tech, transnational corporations and citizenship: allies or rivals?’. During her presentation, she cited SkincAir as an example of a project using AI to improve living conditions.

“The impact of artificial intelligence on human rights is a topic that has generated significant interest within academia and civil society. Possible impacts include AI interfering with privacy and security, discrimination due to bias and misinformation, and the impact on the right to education and employment. For this reason, ethical values and the protection of fundamental rights must be at the heart of the design and implementation of emerging technologies.” One such project is SkincAir, which is developing a mobile application to help healthcare workers in five African countries detect neglected diseases, such as leprosy, at an early stage”, states page 25 of the Congress Proceedings.
