On 9 October, the SkincAIr consortium held its quarterly coordination meeting online, bringing all partners together to review project progress and plan next steps. Led by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), the session provided a valuable opportunity to share updates, address challenges, and strengthen collaboration as the project moves forward.

Throughout the meeting, partners shared updates on the work being carried out within each work package. TeaCup Lab presented the latest findings from culturally informed user research to ensure that the SkincAIr solution reflects local realities, user needs and cultural contexts. The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and Sherwood Science reported on the clinical data collection activities taking place with local healthcare teams to build the dataset that will power the project’s AI tools.

Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts outlined the progress made in developing the skin NTDs detection model, emphasising the advances in training and refining the algorithms behind the app. Meanwhile, AUSTRALO guided the consortium through the ongoing dissemination and communication efforts designed to raise the profile of the project and engage key stakeholders. UPM also provided updates on overall project coordination, including planning, timelines, and risk management. Finally, UPM and OAOA presented their ongoing work on the legal, ethical and regulatory aspects of SkincAIr to ensure compliance with all relevant standards and frameworks.

The meeting reaffirmed the consortium’s strong commitment to working collectively towards a meaningful goal: to empower health workers in Sub-Saharan Africa with innovative, AI-driven tools that will improve the early detection of skin-related neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The SkincAIr project continues to move forward with determination and shared purpose, with each partner contributing their expertise.
